Reflection on Today’s Gospel (Luke 15:1–3, 11–32 – The Prodigal Son)

Today’s Gospel presents one of the most powerful images of God’s mercy: the story of the prodigal son. In this parable, Jesus reveals the heart of the Father—an unconditional love that never stops waiting for His children to return.

The younger son asks for his inheritance and leaves home, choosing a life far from his father. This decision symbolizes how human beings often choose independence from God. We sometimes believe that happiness can be found away from Him, pursuing our own desires and ambitions. Yet the son eventually discovers that life without the father leads only to emptiness, loneliness, and suffering.

The turning point comes when the son “comes to his senses.” He realizes that even the servants in his father’s house live better than he does. This moment represents repentance. True conversion begins when we recognize our brokenness and our need for God.

However, the most moving part of the story is not the son’s return—it is the father’s reaction. While the son is still far away, the father sees him, runs toward him, embraces him, and restores his dignity. In the culture of that time, a father running to meet his son would have been shocking. Yet this action reveals the depth of God’s love. God does not wait for us to prove ourselves worthy; He runs toward us with compassion and forgiveness.

The older son represents another spiritual danger: self-righteousness. Although he stays with the father, his heart is distant. He struggles to accept the mercy shown to his brother. This reminds us that being physically close to God is not enough—we must also share His heart of mercy.

Today’s Gospel invites us to reflect on our own lives. At times, we may be like the younger son who turns away from God. At other times, we may resemble the older son who struggles with jealousy or judgment. Yet the message remains the same: God’s love is greater than our failures.

The Father is always waiting, always watching the road for our return. No matter how far we wander, His mercy is always ready to welcome us home.

🙏 Simple Prayer

Lord, help me to return to You whenever I wander. Give me a humble heart like the prodigal son and a merciful heart like the Father. Teach me to rejoice when others receive Your love and forgiveness.
